IMPORTANT NOTE: Have you ever wondered why some of the articles in Tech
Tidbits seem to be repeats from past issues? No, we're not running out of
material to print - we are simply responding to how often we are asked that
particular question each week on the Tech Support lines. If we see the same
questions being asked over and over, we reprint that question and answer to
make sure that we get the answer out to you before you may be faced with it to
insure you have the answer when you need it. Practice makes perfect, and
reiteration will help us all to remember the answers! All the material in Tech
Tidbits is drawn from actual questions we receive, and even our feature
articles will usually try to deal with these questions in a more in-depth
manner.
OUR SLIP WAS SHOWING...In last week's issue, we incorrectly listed the
LaserWriter IISC capable of a LocalTalk Connection. This is incorrect. The
LaserWriter IISC connects through SCSI cabling. Sorry about the slip.........
We really do know better...HONEST!

AppleFax Won't Work in PassThrough
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
? One of my customers is having difficulties using his Fax Modem in the
passthrough mode. He's following all the instructions, and I've not been able
to isolate the problem. Any tips?
A: With no specific information on the nature of the problem, the only
recently observed caution we can pass on is to make sure that there is no
answering machine on line. We have heard reports that with an answering
machine on, even in pass-through mode, the Fax may fail to work correctly. We
are continuing to look into this matter.
AppleFax Printing from Microsoft Word
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
? I am unable to print from my Fax correctly with Microsoft Word. Can you
provide any tips?
A: Yes. Microsoft Word and some other applications use their own print
routines which may create compatibility problems. If you are experiencing this
type of problem, try holding down the Shift key when selecting PRINT from the
menu: This will call up Apple's print window, and may solve your problems.

SPECIAL FEATURE
ImageWriter Troubleshooting Tips
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Letters Look Jagged
• The ImageWriter LQ produces the best output when you use the Times,
Helvetica, Courier or Symbol font families supplied with the printer. You must
install the LQ's fonts in your system folder.
White Line Though a Line of Text
• Check to make sure power cord or other matter does not obstruct paper path
• Check that there are no tight turns in the paper path
• Check that the paper does not impede its own movement as it leaves the
printer (outgoing paper falling across front of printer falling to floor can
cause drag which affects print quality)
• If the problem continues, and the above are not to blame, the printhead
may be broken and in need of replacement
Paper Comes off Tractor Pins
• Make sure that the stack of paper is aligned squarely with the back of
the LQ
• Make sure that the paper is not stretched too tightly between the left and
right tractors
No LQ Print Dialog Box
• In some applications, the LQ's print dialog box doesn't appear
automatically. Hold down the SHIFT key as you choose PRINT.
Print Stars on Platen or Previous Page
• This problem indicates that the form feed is not advancing the paper up
to the paper bail. The most likely cause is an incorrect DIP switch
setting. Set DIP Switch 2-8 DOWN.
LQ Prints ONLY on the Top Band of Ribbon
• Black ribbons have a tab which causes the printhead to shift down one
"band" per page. This allows the LQ to print on all four bands and extends
the life of the ribbon. Make sure the ribbon is installed correctly. Next,
make sure the tab is not broken or torn off.
• Do not turn off your printer between every print job - each time the printer
is turned on, it begins to print on the top band: Leave the printer on
through multiple print jobs, so it will continue to rotate the bands
throughout the day for more even wear.
Labels and Forms Jam in the Printer
• Printing labels and multipart forms works best when you feed them through
the bottom of the printer on a slotted table.
• Never back out paper - especially labels and forms. Backing out labels may
cause them to peel off onto the platen or to dislodge the Mylar guide inside
the printer. Cut the paper at the next perforation and press the form feed
button to eject it.
Printing Problems With Microsoft Word 3.01
• Version 3.01 (and earlier) of Microsoft Word does not support printing
from more than one bin of the Cut Sheet Feeder. Upgrade to Microsoft Word
3.02.
• It does not correctly handle right justified text. Upgrade to Microsoft
Word 3.02.
• It does not give the normal LQ print dialog box (hold down SHIFT when
selecting PRINT to get the LQ's print dialog box.
Paper feeds from Bin 1
• Check that the DIP switches are set correctly.
• Check that the tension release lever is down and that the LQ is set for
friction feed.
• With two expansion bins, make sure to remove the gear configuration
plug from bin 2.
• If paper comes only from the bin chosen as "First Page From," the
application probably does not support multiple bins. Check with software
vendor to determine if there is a fix or an upgrade to correct the
problem
Envelopes are Ejected After Loaded
• When installing the envelope attachment, make sure to slide the left paper
guide on the attachment to the LEFT tab stop. This is the position for
envelopes. If you don't do this, the LQ can't detect that the envelope has
been loaded and ejects it.

LQ Rework Questions
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
There seems to be some confusion about how the LQ factory rework program works.
We hope the information below will help you understand the program.
WHAT PROBLEMS DOES IT FIX?
• Print problems at the top and bottom 1-1/2" of the page
• Irritating pitch and sound level when printing certain applications (dense
graphics)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE REWORK PROGRAM?
• Any customer who experiences one or both of these problems.
• Affected customers have units with serial number 183101013 or lower:
Customers with higher serial numbers have units that were purchased after
the finished goods products were already enhanced.
• If the customer has a unit that falls into the affected serial number range,
AND whose unit exhibits one or both of the problems
WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE
• The rework does not cover other types of failures: In the case of a
hardware failure, standard repair procedures should be performed
DOES THE CUSTOMER GET BACK THE SAME PRINTER HE SENDS IN?
• No. The customer will receive an exchange reworked printer and not his own
printer, and not a new printer.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
• Lead time may vary. It is not an immediate exchange, and may take several
weeks. Apple is striving to reduce the time the customer must wait for his
reworked unit, but it is difficult to estimate lead times. Please let your
customers know that several weeks are involved, and that you will call them as
soon as their unit arrives.
LaserWriter to Macintosh without LocalTalk
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Q: I have found that by using Apple's M0197 cable (Apple System Peripheral - 8
Cable) I can "direct-connect" a LaserWriter II NT or NTX to a Macintosh Plus or
later, thus avoiding the use of LocalTalk connectors altogether. Everything
appears to work OK, but I'm not sure. What's the real story here; is this
really OK or am I going to have problems with this later on?
A: In some configurations the above configuration may work now, but it is not
guaranteed to work in the future, nor is it supported by Apple. It is
important to note that the data being transmitted over the cable in this
configuration is much faster than "standard" serial communications, and using
the system in this way may violate FCC regulations regarding Electro-Magnetic
Interference (EMI) for those products. As a result of this, interference from
this connection could occur in other nearby devices. Apple Computer only
supports the LocalTalk connectors for any LocalTalk devices, since they have
the ability to attenuate the signals to keep EMI within acceptable levels.
